Establishing Friendships

Saturday, April 14, 2012, the Federated Flies team were guests of Chagrin River Outfitters, the leading Fly Fishing Outfitter and guide service in Northeast Ohio, located on the Chagrin River in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

The Federated Fly team of Bill Kopec, Ben Osbourn, and Fred Bender  accompanied by Lisa Braun, Founder and Executive Director, Ohio City Power, were welcomed by Chagrin River Outfitters staff member, Peter Alves and expert fly tier Dave Kilby. Owner Dan Pribanic of Chagrin River Outfitters offered his staff, shop and services to help show his support of the program.  Ohio City Power is grateful to Dan for the partnership.

Federated Fly visitors marveled at the beautiful store - "amazing!" - and had a chance to see top quality materials and products first-hand.

Invaluable Assessments And Skills Training

The team had an opportunity to have their work assessed by Peter Alves from a buyer's point of view and receive detailed instruction and question-and-answer with expert fly tier Dave Kilby - working from the store's very own fly tying station

New Relationships, Knowledge, And Improved Skills

A big thank you to Peter Alves, staff member at Chagrin River Outfitters, for the warm hospitality and a special thank you to Dave Kilby for generously sharing time and expertise so that Federated Flies tiers can gain new knowledge and improve their skills!

New Instructor at Federated Flies

Fred Bender, who has been fly tying for Federated Files since January, is currently working as the instructor for the group, with Bill Kopec, Ben Osborne and Albert Wagner.

While the previous instructor, Jim Newell, has left to pursue other duties (Jim is shown in the photo above at St. Paul's Community Church and Outreach), Fred has been working on some of Jim’s former tasks, such as taking inventory of materials and tools, overseeing and helping the fly tyers acquire a skill.

Special Project for The Trout Club, Cleveland Museum of Natural History

The group is working on an order of woolly buggers for the Trout Club of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in University Circle. Fly fishing boxes of assorted Federated Flies will be a featured item at The Trout Club's 34th Annual Banquet and Auction to be held at the Museum on April 21, 2012.

The tyers have been meeting at St. Paul’s on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Fred has also completed some fly tying in his spare time where he resides at St. Herman's House of Hospitality, an Ohio City Power partner organization.

New Horizons

Jim will be missed, as he was knowledgeable and tried to make it a fun experience. However, the group is excited to continue fly tying and practice many of the things that Jim had taught and, perhaps, also some things that they have picked up along the way.
